5 Homemade & Effortless Solutions to Keep Bugs Away

December 2, 2021

Bugs in our home are not fun to deal with. It's annoying, frustrating, and stressful. You have to find a pest control company, possibly move furniture around when they come, and also leave the house while they spray for the pests. While all of this is happening you keep wondering where you went wrong and how you could've prevented it. Some pests are too much to handle on your own. But, there are some small ways that you can keep less harmful bugs out of your way.

Today we have five homemade solutions that you can create with household items. They are easy, simple, and keep the bugs away!

Coffee Grounds

The first one is coffee grounds. We were surprised too. How does coffee keep pests away? Turns out that bugs have a very strong sense of smell. So when we smell our coffee in the morning, they are overloaded with the aroma. The best part is, you can use your used coffee grounds. While saving your house, you are recycling as well. Coffee grounds are best for keeping mosquitoes away.

All you have to do is burn the used coffee grounds. This will make the smell even stronger and keep away mosquitoes, bees, and wasps. Make sure the grounds are dry and place them in a bowl outside. Then all you do is burn it like you would burn incense. The smoke also signals danger to bugs and they are also likely to stay away for that reason.

Borax and Sugar

Borax is a mineral found in your cosmetic items and toothpaste, but also soap and weed killer. It isn't as dangerous for humans, but it is deathly to ants. It messes with their digestive system and eventually kills them. The worker ants will bring it back to the colony for the other ants. Our hope as humans is that it kills the queen ant.

The best borax to use is liquid borax. Find the source of the ants and put it on a small plate or tray near the hole. You also have to mix it with sugar and warm water. A good recipe is mixing together 1.5 cups of water, a half cup of sugar, and 1.5 tablespoons of borax. Then you put it on the trap and wait for the ants to fall for it.

Vinegar & Dish Soap

Mixing vinegar and dish soap together is an even easier way to get rid of bugs. Fruit flies are the victim of this tactic. All you do is mix together in a bowl some vinegar and some drops of dish soap. The dish soap breaks the tension of the liquid, causing the fruit flies to be trapped.

Many of us have dogs, and many of our dogs can bring in fleas. Fleas become a huge problem because they lay multiple eggs a day. A great way to get rid of them is salt. Fleas thrive in moist environments, and salt will dry out all the moisture, killing the fleas. All you have to do is grind up the salt and sprinkle it around your house where the fleas could be. This could be your carpet, furniture, or the dog's bed. Make sure your dog doesn't go where you sprinkled the salt. Keep it there for 1-2 days and then use your vacuum to clean it up. Repeat the process as many times as needed.

Essential Oils

Essential Oils are a great way to get rid of dust mites! All you have to do is when washing your sheets and other bedding, drop about 5-10 drops of essential oils in the soap and water once the washer is filled up. Let it soak for about 10-15 minutes before starting the wash. Make sure to wash with hot water in order to kill the dust mites. The essential oils will get rid of the dust mites and add a nice scent to your laundry!
